Our Favourite Bali Hot Springs With Mineral-Rich Waters

Banjar Hot Springs, Buleleng

Holy spring waters in the village were known to the locals for generations for their healing properties. With time, the area was more developed for visitors, including foreigners passing by Lovina Beach or heading to Pemuteran in North Bali.

Getting through lush tropical gardens, you will find here three large hot spring pools with water rich in sulphur and iron. All have roughly the temperature of 38 °C with 26% of sulphur content.

The main pool on the second level is connected to a restaurant. They serve a very affordable menu, a mix of Indonesian, Italian, and Western food. “Kids pool” is next to the central pool. It is only 1 meter deep and has dragon fountains along the wall for a massage.

Pool showers are a must – gravity and water flow make them the perfect tool to ease the tensed-up shoulders and neck muscles.

Plus, there are also a few souvenir stalls and a small spa and massage facility offering Balinese massage and traditional body scrub.

If you haven’t explored the area, we highly recommend visiting Brahmavihara Arama Buddhist Monastery, Lovina Beach to watch dolphins, Pemuteran for snorkelling, and the National Park island.

Entry is 45,000 IDR (4.5 AUD) for tourists. Showers and changing rooms are free, while lockers and toilets come at an extra charge (less than 0.5 AUD).

These geothermal springs at the foothills of Mount Batur are the most famous hot springs in Bali, for sure!

There are several pools, including a smaller pool for kids, with Lake Batur and mountain views. Some pools have showers and fountains. Average temperature in the top pools is 38° – 40° Celsius, but it can be a bit cooler in the lower pools.

Many Batur sunrise hike tours include this natural hot spring as a stop for a relaxing dip after the hike, so the pools will get busy in the morning but empty up after 10-11 AM. In any case, the pools are pretty big for everyone to rest comfortably.

You can also order food or enjoy a massage on site; however, if you’re going for the massage, make sure to ask about the price and duration upfront. Some therapists are less transparent than others.

Travel Tips For Visiting Hot Springs In Bali

  • Sulphur and mineral-rich water has a somewhat muddy colour. It is totally normal. It can also have a signature smell of boiled eggs. However, do not drink this water and avoid washing your eyes with it.
  • Getting a taxi, bike, or car will be hard for all of the hot springs in Bali. The two options are either renting a scooter (if you have proper paperwork) or simply hiring a local driver (easier).
  • Most hot springs are open daily, and they are the least crowded in the morning or late afternoon. For public springs, bring your own towel.
  • Wear a comfortable and not very revealing swimsuit. No bikini. Many public hot springs were or still are somewhat sacred for Balinese people. Some locals wear t-shirts and a sarong in the hot springs.
  • Skip white clothes and towels; sulphur-rich water is very yellow/green and can stain clothes.
  • Hot springs in Bali are public, family-friendly places, and local people often come with the whole family. Make sure to be respectful of everyone’s space, and don’t use any bathing products or sun protection in the water (if it isn’t waterproof). In some cases, you can pre-book private bathing pools.

FAQs

Does Bali Have Natural Hot Springs?

Yes! Bali has active volcanoes, and it factors into the abundance of natural hot spring pools around Mount Batur in the Kintamani area, in Tabanan, around Mount Batukaru, and in North Bali.

Hot spring water in Bali is rich in sulphur.

Are Mount Batur Hot Springs Worth It?

If you are going on a jeep tour or hiking Mount Batur for sunrise, the Batur natural hot springs are a great spot to rest afterwards.

However, it is true that the place gets very busy, and most of the visitors are tourists. Price is also much higher than local hot springs in Tabanan or North Bali, but those are also not that big or organised, so you are paying for better service and more facilities.

What Is The Difference Between An Onsen And A Hot Spring?

Onsen is the Japanese word for a natural hot spring that often doubles as a public bathhouse and meets certain temperature and water quality standards. A hot spring is a general term for any naturally warm thermal bath.

Under the Japanese occupation of Bali during World War II, some hot springs were more developed as the Japanese missed a part of their routine – bathing in an onsen.
